The United States withdrew from the original agreement in 2018, under the mandate of the then president donald trump, encouraged by Israel. Diplomats told Reuters last week that a new deal was taking shape.
“We were unhappy with the deal to begin with and of course we are more unhappy with the (emerging) deal,” said the Israeli foreign minister, Yair Lapid, to Jewish leaders in the United States. “But There is a dialogue with the US government on various issues surrounding this agreement.”
Among them, he said, was Tehran’s demand that the Revolutionary Guards Corps Iranians be removed from the US list of terrorist organizations. Israel’s message, Lapid said, was: “This is a mistake. Don’t do it.”
Iran and the administration of US President Joe Biden have not confirmed such a claim.
Lapid said Israel and the United States were also discussing “other ways” – which he did not detail – to prevent Iran from making enough progress on projects such as uranium enrichment to reach the threshold of capacity to develop a nuclear bomb. The Islamic Republic denies seeking nuclear weapons.
At the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, meanwhile, Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli referred to the post-agreement talks with Washington.
“We will have to work on a complementary agreement between Israel and the United States,” said Michaeli, who like Lapid is a member of the security cabinet.
Israel says it will not be bound by any agreement and that it could go so far as to take unilateral action against Iranian nuclear facilities.
