“The worst mistakes in facial care are to be too rough to the skin and do not protect them,” says Julia Mayr, beautician and owner of medesthetics in Leonding. In the podcast interview, she talks about the basics of professional skin care, modern cosmetic applications and typical errors in dealing with our skin.

OÖNachrichten: How does medical cosmetics differ from classical cosmetics?

Mayr: The difference is mainly due to the intensity of the applications. Classic cosmetics work mainly without technical devices, while in medical cosmetics more intensive methods are used using apparatus methods. However, this does not mean that classic cosmetics are less effective – it tends to address different needs and intensity levels.

What are the limits in the field of a beautician?

We only take care of the healthy skin and, for example, are not allowed to carry out injections or medical treatments. In the event of severe skin problems, such as acne with severe inflammation or dermatitis, we always recommend visiting a dermatologist.

How do you define “healthy skin”?

Healthy skin is radiant, even and has an intact skin barrier. There are no permanent redness or inflammation, the skin looks balanced and vital.

How does a professional skin analysis work?

First it is clarified which goal the customer is pursuing: is it about anti-aging, relaxation, the treatment of pigment spots or impurities? Only then do we analyze the skin and also discuss the current nursing routine at home. It is important to remain realistic – not everything can be remedied in a short time or completely.

Are there typical age groups for certain skin problems?

Impure skin not only affects teenagers. Many customers between the ages of 30 and 40 are still fighting with it. From around 40, topics such as redness or pigment spots increase.

How do you differentiate skin types?

It is crucial how much moisture and fat (sebum) produce the skin. There are dry skin types, skin with excessive sebum production or mixed forms. The care is coordinated.

What are common mistakes in daily care?

A frequent error is too aggressive cleaning, mostly through foaming gels, because they convey the feeling of cleanliness – but this deprives the skin too much moisture and makes it even more susceptible to irritation. Mild cleaning products such as oil, milk or creams are better depending on the skin type. If, for example, the skin is petrified too often or irritated with acids, this can harm long -term.

What does the ideal daily skin care routine look like?

Less is often more: cleaning, tonic, moisture serum and absolutely sun protection. Clean again in the evening, possibly more intensely with make-up, then serum and a suitable night care.

How do you choose the right product in the flood of product in the Dorgeriemarkt or in the pharmacy?

It is important to know what the skin needs – that is often difficult. Therefore, it is advisable to have a professional analysis at least once. A common error is, for example, that simply more greasy creams are used on scaly skin, although moisture is actually missing.

What role does water and temperature play when cleaning?

Fortunately, our water quality is very good in Austria. Water should be neither too hot nor too cold when used. Too hot water stimulates the skin and can deteriorate acne.
