“The UN, in accordance with General Assembly resolutions, continues to fully support the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders,” Guterres said.
The UN General Assembly will hold an annual meeting on Wednesday on the “temporary occupation of Ukraine, put in place after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.”
In the statement, The Secretary General of the United Nations “urges all interested actors to concentrate their efforts on the immediate cessation of hostilities” and “the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure”, by prioritizing diplomacy to resolve the crisis.
According to diplomats, discussions were underway on Monday afternoon to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council as soon as possible on the recognition of independence decided by Russia. By chance, this meeting will take place under the Russian presidency, since Moscow is in charge of the rotating presidency of the Security Council in February.
