Where’s the best? Krapfen from the supermarket is the test winner

The donuts were bought with prices from 25 cents to 2.95 euros at supermarkets, discounters, in organic supermarkets and in ten bakeries with several branches. The result: the test result “good” was awarded 16 times. There was no “very good”.

According to a VKI broadcast on Tuesday, the first-ranked donut only just missed out on this top rating. According to the test results published on the VKI website, this year’s test winner came from the supermarket. The classic apricot donut from the delicatessen department Billa Plus had the nose in front, it was said there. The products of the discounter followed in equal places Lidl (bakery shop) and the Bakery Ströck.

The most important test criterion of the VKI donut test was the tasting. The winner in terms of taste was the donut from the bakery chain man, as stated on the VKI website. The tasters were disappointed by the “Butterkrapfen” from the Joseph Brot bakery, which was incidentally the most expensive of the specimens tested. All samples were very dark and tasted burnt and greasy, the broadcast said.

“Vrapfen” significantly greasy than stated

In addition, the VKI testers checked the manufacturer’s information on sugar and fat and took a closer look at the jam filling. According to the VKI broadcast, when checking the declaration of sugar and fat content, the vegan “Vrapfen” from the Billa Plus supermarket chain showed the greatest deviation. It contained around 60 percent more fat than stated on the packaging. According to the VKI, it was also remarkable that most producers stated a higher sugar content than was actually contained (including sugar pollination).

“Almost all grain and eggs come from Austria. Only Lidl has its donuts produced in Germany. Flour and eggs from ‘EU / non-EU origin’ are used there. The fruit filling usually comes from Austria, the organic jam from Germany “, explained VKI project manager Nina Eichberger. “It is also gratifying that all producers, with the exception of Lidl, are now doing without palm oil.”
