The innovative generation of electricity combines several functions: it provides around 19 gigawatt hours of green railway current every year, creates a habitat for animals and plants and supports animal -friendly agriculture.
Among the PV modules, around 9,600 chickens and 150 sheep, flower strips with regional seeds will graze insects, birds and small animals. “If the sunlight becomes 100 percent green railway and can graze sheep and chickens at the same time, we use synergies efficient, ecologically and regional,” said ÖBB infrastructure board member Johann Pluy at the opening.

Direct feed -in into the rail network
The solar modules extend over an area of around 18 hectares. Enough energy for around 6000 Railjet trips from Vienna to Linz per year. Due to the close proximity to the Wels – Passau railway line, the railway current can be fed directly into the overhead line. This reduces line losses and ensures the supply on a heavily frequented main traffic line. “Together with the ÖBB, we were able to implement a technically tailor-made solution in which the PV current immediately benefits from rail traffic. This is also technologically a milestone,” said Oliver Eisenhöld, Head of Energy at RWA Raiffeisen Ware Austria. Cro
