“Excuses and problem descriptions don’t build cycle paths.” With these words, the green mobility spokeswoman Dagmar Engl commented on the fact that cycling in the greater Linz area is shrinking while it is growing in other cities.
According to the state politician, the fact that bicycle traffic decreased last year at the Puchenau (minus 2.4 percent) and Steyregg (minus 9.6 percent) measuring points, while the proportion of cars in these areas increased, reveals the dilemma and the Standstill of domestic transport policy. That’s why the “long overdue” cycling offensive is finally needed, because people who want to use the bike will and can only do so if the offer is available, says Engl. “People don’t want to hear why something doesn’t work. They want solutions and action.”
As reported, the office of Transport Minister Günther Steinkellner (FP) blames tourism for the decline. A closure of the Danube cycle path near Haibach and the mixed weather in the summer of last year had a negative impact on the cycle counting points.
