Iván Duque says that abortion will be used as a contraceptive

In an interview with the radio station La FM, Iván Duque, who defined himself as “a pro-life person,” was outraged that this measure allows abortion “without any argument until almost six months of pregnancy.”

“It seems delicate to me that, in the scope that is being put on the table, we are making it easier for abortion to become an almost contraceptive practice, recurrent and regular“said the right-wing president.

For Duque, the decriminalization of the IVE is “worrying” in a society like Colombia, in which, he explained, there is machismo and high rates of unwanted pregnancies, reported the Europa Press news agency.

“I am concerned that this practice of abortion, which is contrary to life, becomes a daily practice and, in a sexist country, that this mechanism can be resorted to, that it becomes a contraceptive method for many so as not to use a condom” , expressed, while considering that, instead, a society like the Colombian should fight against unwanted pregnancies or adolescents.

In addition, Iván Duque cquestioned that a decision of this caliber has been made “only by five people”, in reference to the judges who voted in favor of decriminalizing the IVE.

With five votes in favor and four against, the Colombian Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, approved on Monday the decriminalization of abortion up to 24 weeks in a historic vote.

This same court had already legalized the IVE in 2006 for three reasons: rape, malformation or risk of maternal life.

Despite the rejection of the conservative sectors, the sentence was applauded by the Just Cause movement, which had filed six charges of unconstitutionality to eliminate the IVE from the Penal Code, and Colombian feminist groups, which this afternoon will hold a celebration in front of the headquarters of the Court “with music, artists and print of posters and t-shirts to remember this historic ruling”.

Various human rights organizations also celebrated the ruling as “a historic victory for the Colombian women’s movement.”

“After the legalization of abortion in the Argentina and the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Mexico that decriminalizes abortion, this ruling is yet another example of the unstoppable momentum of the green tide in Latin America, contrary to the setbacks that we observe, for example, in the United States,” said the executive director of Amnesty International (AI) Argentina, Mariela Belski.

However, AI warned that, despite being a fundamental right established by the Constitutional Court in 2006, access to abortion is currently “inequitable and limited in Colombia.”

According to data from this NGO, 400,400 abortions are performed each year in the country, of which only 10% are performed in safe health centers, with a large concentration of services in the main cities.
