Putin accuses Ukrainian intelligence services of killing ex-head of the DPR Zakharchenko in 2018

The head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Alexander Zakharchenko, who signed the Minsk agreements to resolve the situation in Donbass, was killed in 2018 by a member of the Ukrainian special services, this is a “direct political assassination.” This was announced on February 22 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Under them, under these documents (Minsk agreements. – Ed.) were the signatures of the leaders of two previously unrecognized republics. By the way, one of them was killed as a result of a terrorist act, he died at the hands of a member of the Ukrainian special services. There is no question here, it is an obvious thing. This is just a direct political assassination,” he told reporters.

Zakharchenko died on August 31, 2018 as a result of an explosion in the Separ cafe in the center of Donetsk.

In June 2019, the DPR Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that the murders of Zakharchenko and the commander of the Sparta militia unit Arsen Pavlov (aka Motorola) were implicated by members of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Andrei Baydala (Swede) and Sergey Motorin.

In July 2020, it was reported that the SBU detained Baidala on suspicion of committing a crime under the article on illegal handling of weapons and ammunition by a group of persons.
