In total, the Austria customs office carried out 635,176 controls in 2024, as the Ministry of Finance announced. In 2023 there were 607,081, which means an increase of around 4.6 percent. Violations, especially for addictive, tobacco products, product safety and medicinal products, were again at a high level.

Last year around 1740 customs officers were deployed. The team also includes 29 service dogs, four are still in training. 8.164 billion euros were collected in taxes, the majority benefit the Austrian state budget. At 3.8 billion euros, mineral oil tax was the largest item, the tobacco tax brought around 2.13 billion euros.
200 living animals discovered
In the area of species protection, 103 reports caused by controls by the Austria customs office. 200 living animals and 3350 goods from species -protected animals and plants were taken up. Among the secured goods were, among other things, a variety of medicines with ingredients of protected species, but also living leeches, a dead Nile crocodile and corals.
When a Serbian van in St. Anton am Arlberg was checked, a Tiger head that falls under the regulation was confiscated and the handlebars were indicated for suspicion of a legally punishable act.
