Cat lovers have long known: a gentle purring, a soft fur – stroking a cat gives you a feeling of well -being and conjures up a smile in the face. Now studies show that robot animals in people with dementia also have similar positive effects: they promote relaxation, reduce fears and can alleviate problematic behaviors of patients. The robot dementia cats, which are used at the clinic for neurological-psychiatric gerontology of the Kepler University Hospital as a supplement to the therapy and care concept, are equipped with modern technology such as movement and vibration sensors and react to care.

Also enthusiastic relatives
The patients enjoy purring, a meow and also when the kitten opens their eyes or raises the paw. The relatives are also impressed if they can read the positive effects directly in the faces of their loved ones, as graduate nurse and dementia care expert Sabine Wolfmayr-Hofer tells. “Some take over the idea right away and give their dementia relatives the cozy companions for their birthday or the next visit.” Wolfmayr-Hofer’s colleagues are also enthusiastic about the robot animals. So it should have happened that a kitten was carried away on the visiting car without further ado.
