The crisis promoted by Putin is causing a growing division within the Republican Party.
On one side are traditional foreign policy hawks who have advocated a more confrontational stance with Russia’s president, and on the other, a “Trumpist” faction that has expressed some sympathy for the Russian’s tactics.
“This is great. Putin is declaring a large part of Ukraine independent,” Trump said on a Conservative Podcast. “That is wonderful”.
“Here we have a guy who is very smart. I know him very well. Very, very well,” he added.
“Putin now says, ‘It’s independent,’ a big part of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s going to come in as a peacemaker,” said Trump, who joked that would send the military force deployed in Russia to the US border with Mexico to control migration.
In his interview, the former Republican president, accused by the Democrats of having won the Presidency with the help of Russian hackers, revealed that Ukraine was always on Putin’s mind.
“He sees this opportunity. I knew he had always wanted Ukraine. I used to talk to him about it. I said ‘you can’t do it, you’re not going to do it’, but I saw that he wanted it. We used to talk about it in depth.” noted about his talks with the Russian president.
