Van der Bellen in Alpbach: “A little more like the Baltic States”

People in Latvia are “true EU fans”, and enthusiasm for Europe like there “would also do us well here in Austria,” said van der Bellen in the presence of his Latvian counterpart Edgar Rinkevics.

Alpbach as a place, “where people come together and think about the future” is a “guide”. However, the question is which direction you want to look and go. In one direction one sees, for example, “a neighboring country in which the freedom of media is increasingly circumcised” and the rule of law and judiciary are undermined and fundamental rights are “a country that is no longer a liberal democracy”.

Latvia, on the other hand, border directly to Russia and thus to a country “which wages a brutal war of attack” and dreams of a great kingdom. “Anyone who sees such a big danger right in front of their own door knows that it is a bad idea to face their own.” In Latvia, it is clear to most people “that you create strong alliances, that you get friends to your side, that you can help together within the EU”.
