On February 23, the German reinsurance company Munich Re announced the cancellation of the Nord Stream 2 contract.
As RBC was told in the company, this decision was made public in February 2021. Then Munich Re stopped insurance of SP-2 against the backdrop of the threat of sanctions.
Earlier in the day, the head of the international energy concern Uniper, Klaus-Dieter Maubach, said the company remains optimistic about Nord Stream 2. He clarified that the company is currently investigating what it would mean to stop the project.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the LPR and DPR and agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. On February 22, the Russian leader signed federal laws on the ratification of friendship and cooperation treaties with the DPR and LPR.
Against this background, the West again started talking about anti-Russian sanctions, including those regarding Nord Stream 2. Thus, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer allowed the inclusion of SP-2 in the package of anti-Russian sanctions, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the country’s Ministry of Economy had received an order to stop the certification of the gas pipeline.
On February 22, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin regrets the suspension of the gas pipeline certification. According to him, this project has nothing to do with politics and is intended to become “a stabilizing element for the gas market in Europe.”
On Wednesday, German Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said that Nord Stream 2 could be completely stopped. He added that Berlin is coordinating with European and American partners.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic States, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed.
