Spanish Foreign Ministry recommended its citizens to leave Ukraine

The Spanish Foreign Ministry has updated recommendations for its citizens to travel to Ukraine in connection with the aggravation of the situation and Russia’s recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR).

“Due to the deteriorating security situation, it is recommended not to travel to Ukraine. It is recommended that Spaniards currently in Ukraine temporarily leave the country as soon as possible,” reads the recommendations on Ukraine published on February 23 on the website of the Spanish Foreign Ministry.

Previous recommendations contained a clause on refusing to travel to Ukraine, and the Foreign Ministry advised citizens who are there to “seriously consider” leaving the country.

The day before, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss urged her citizens to leave Ukraine. “All Britons should fly commercial now while they’re still available,” she said.

At the same time, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Washington ordered the evacuation of American diplomats remaining in Ukraine. According to the interlocutors of the portal, the US Embassy is being moved to Poland. This decision was made due to the threat of Russia’s “invasion” of Ukraine, which, according to Washington, increased due to Moscow’s recognition of the independence of the DPR and LPR. Diplomats will return to the country if the “attack” does not happen.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s recognition of the independence of the DPR and LPR, and then signed the relevant decrees. In addition, the Russian leader and heads of the Donbass republics Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, which, among other things, provide for the right to build military bases on the territory of the parties and provide military assistance to each other.

The situation on the line of contact in Donbass escalated on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including with heavy weapons. At the same time, Kiev announced the shelling of the positions of the armed forces of Ukraine. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.

Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict.
