There are a little more than a million students in Austria – in the individual educational institutions from elementary school to upper level, including vocational schools and polytechnic schools.
This number is expected to continue to rise by the 2029/30 school year, the expected plus is three percent. After that, the number of students should be declining again. This emerges from the school visit forecast of Statistics Austria, as announced on Wednesday Thomas Burg, the specialist statistical general director.

The reason for the now further increase is a birth plus from 2014 to 2017, including the recent immigration of school-age children from Ukraine.
However, because the vintages were weaker again from 2018, a “moderate” decline will be expected from the school year 2030/31, the Ministry of Education speaks of “medium -term relaxation” in view of the teacher’s lack of teachers. At the elementary schools, the declining numbers will be noticeable from 2026, as can be seen from documents from the Ministry. Because the children of the birth -strong age cohorts (from 2014) have long been visiting the elementary schools and are now gradually leaving them again.
