Low blood supplies because of Corona: Red Cross calls for donations

Many blood donors are absent during the pandemic due to illness or quarantine. More than 2,500 people in the district are currently infected with the corona virus. Therefore, it is all the more important to those people who can donate blood, emphasizes the Red Cross Upper Austria. The increased need for blood products has shrank the reserves of the Linz Blood Center in the past few days. Around 1000 canned goods are needed in Austria every day.

Blood groups zero and A are particularly sought after, especially Rh negative. “Anyone who donates blood is actively serving society. As the number one emergency drug, a blood unit is needed every 90 seconds in Austria,” says state parliament president Max Hiegelsberger.

With almost 4000 blood donations taken in 2021, the district of Braunau is in second place in Upper Austria in absolute terms. “That’s great – but despite Corona, the need for blood products has not decreased. That’s why it’s all the more important to take part in the fundraisers right now,” says Herbert Markler, Braunau’s Red Cross district manager. The next opportunities to donate blood in the district can be found in the info box.

For faster and more convenient processing, the health questionnaire can now also be completed from home using the new blood donation app “My Blood”. The preparation for the blood donation is processed as quickly as possible, the donation itself only takes a few minutes. Hand disinfection is provided, measures such as wearing a mouth and nose protector and increasing the distance between the collection beds are implemented.

Only those who feel healthy and fit should come to blood donation appointments. Cough, runny nose, hoarseness or similar symptoms are always grounds for exclusion from donating blood.
