National Council: Community bonus fails due to lack of a majority

The ÖVP reacted with outrage. In a broadcast, club boss August Wöginger blamed the Social Democrats for the fact that 525 million euros could not be distributed to the municipalities.

It was planned that the federal government could grant the municipalities a special-purpose grant for investments in the municipality if they reached a certain vaccination rate. A total of EUR 75 million should be paid out when a vaccination rate of 80 percent is reached for the first time, an additional total of EUR 150 million for 85 percent and a further total of EUR 300 million for 90 percent.

Constitutional Majority Necessary?

In the committee, the opposition had doubted that a constitutional provision was needed for this and suspected that the coalition only wanted to blame it if the law did not pass. Wöginger replies: Since this is a deviation from the Financial Constitution Act, a constitutional majority is necessary.

He does not understand why the Social Democrats take this blocking attitude, said Wöginger. A bonus for committed fight against the pandemic would be “important and right”
