“I hope I haven’t bored her.” With these words, Alois Riedl decided to talk to the OÖN. The important innviertel painter, who celebrated his 90th birthday on June 14, had even said concerns that his growing up in St. Marienkirchen near Schärding was “stinkfad”, after all, his vita was “quite normal”.
Riedl’s attitude to his person can be seen as a classic dilemma between self-and-external portrait: Both do not match. Because just like the expert, picturesque gestures and shapes and his wife, the renowned sculptor Annerose Riedl (76), “tears around”, is above average in view of her more mature age: works by Alois Riedl can currently be seen in the Egon-Schiele-Centrum in Krumau, also in Vorchdorf and soon in Vienna. In October there is a double show of the couple, which “acts artistically strictly separated”, in Linz. “I am very happy when I can experience that,” says Riedl and laughs. Because for two you would currently make your home in Brunnenthal into “a mini hospital”.
Overwhelming and reverberation
In contrast, one does not need to worry about the sharpness of Riedl’s spirit, which “already describes a bissl as a workaholic”. So he tells of the first exhibition that he saw as a young man in Linz “and who still reverberates”, but “absolutely did not impress him during his visit”. Work from Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) could be seen. Riedl knew the works of the pioneering expressionist of Viennese modernity “in stamp size” – from a catalog. They liked here. “But I was so overwhelmed by the great originals, so overwhelmed by the rough painting … I couldn’t do anything with her as a young, unprepared person.” The question of whether this is not interesting because Riedl’s works could be described in the same words, he acknowledges with a laugh: “That’s why I tell you.”
