55 square meters of living space, 20 square meters of balcony in Linz-Urfahr, 530 euros rent. A bargain. The apartment found university graduates Matthias Küblböck on the WILLAGE platform.

“The broker wrote on my request, he is on vacation, I should write to his colleague on WhatsApp,” says the 26-year-old. The latter agreed a viewing date, to which he, however, sent an assistant. He also led the young Upper Austrian through the rooms. Küblböck wanted the apartment. The contracts he received were given corporate labeling, the website and commercial register were examined. Everything seemed okay. The 26-year-old transferred € 2121 deposit.
A bad awakening
However, the evil awakening followed last Monday: Instead of the agreed handover of the keys, the – closed – apartment only came together with another candidate who is also rid of his deposit and is still without an apartment.

Not an isolated case, as Stephanie Berger confirms from crime prevention at the State Criminal Police Office. It is difficult to get to the perpetrators because there are three weeks between the transfer to an Austrian account and the fraud. Three weeks in which the fraudsters had had time to blur their traces. Interested, says Berger, of course.
