Hydrogen drives from Steyr: BMW invests 50 million euros in Upper Austria

This was announced by the BMW tips in the presence of state politics in Steyr on Wednesday. The series development of a fuel cell system is planned, which is to be produced in Steyr from 2028. The development is a joint project with Toyota, BMW takes place on the new fuel cell system and prototype construction in the hydrogen competence center in Munich.

In addition to the fuel cells in which hydrogen and oxygen are chemically reacting and creating electricity, the fuel cell system includes “many other components such as heat management, control units, air control and the hydrogen subsystem,” said BMW on Wednesday.

50 jobs in Steyr

A few days ago, the series production of the electric motors in Steyr started, now the competence for fuel cell systems, the Upper Austrian governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP), as well as BMW engine boss Klaus von Moltke, were happy at a joint press date. “The special thing is that the complex fuel cell drives from around 150 individual parts are installed by specially trained employees-and with a high level of handicraft and at the same time the highest quality requirements. We call this our high-tech manufacturers,” said Moltke. Around 50 employees will be used in Steyr for the production of the fuel cell system.
