Champions League final in Russia: MEPs call for relocation

“We call on you to stop considering St. Petersburg and other Russian cities as venues for international football competitions,” a group of parliamentarians wrote to UEFA.

In addition, the cooperation with the Russian state-owned company Gazprom as a UEFA sponsor should be ended. Sanctions against Russian officials “who are complicit in violating international law” are also to be considered. A little later, UEFA announced an extraordinary meeting of its most important body, the Executive Committee, for Friday (10:00 a.m.).

There is a first reaction from the German second division club Schalke 04. The member of the supervisory board delegated by the main sponsor Gazprom, Matthias Warnig, has resigned, as the club announced. The 66-year-old had been a member of the committee since July 2019. The Austrian Bundesliga club FK Austria has been supported annually with a seven-digit euro sum since 2018 up to and including 2023. On Wednesday, the “Violets” announced that the situation was being monitored, but that a “very good cooperation model” was being maintained with Gazprom.
