The US, Germany and five other leading democratic economic powers (G7) on Thursday urged Russia to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine and withdraw its troops from the country. “President Putin has brought the war back to the European continent. He has placed himself on the wrong side of history,” said a statement by the heads of state and government of the group of seven after a video link. This took place under the leadership of the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Federal Republic currently chairs the group.
“Grave breach of the UN Charter”
In the statement, the G7 called on the international community to condemn the Russian attack “in the strongest possible terms” and to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Ukraine. She speaks of a “completely unjustified” attack. “It constitutes a serious violation of international law and a serious breach of the United Nations Charter.” The crisis is a serious threat to the international order with repercussions far beyond Europe. “There is no justification for forcibly changing internationally recognized borders.”
UN resolution in progress
The United States is therefore preparing a resolution directed against Moscow at the United Nations. This Friday there will be a new emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, according to diplomatic circles on Thursday. The resolution will condemn in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression, reaffirm Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as independence and unity, it said. It is intended to demand immediate withdrawal from Russia.
Since Russia is one of only five countries with a veto in the Security Council, it is clear that the resolution would fail if there was a vote. However, the US and its Western allies hope to largely isolate Moscow in the Council.
The seven leaders of the G7 also offered humanitarian aid to Ukraine. They urged Russia not to endanger OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) monitors in the region. In addition to the USA and Germany, the G7 also includes Great Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Japan.
Biden advises in the “Situation Room”
US President Joe Biden called a meeting of the National Security Council. The White House said on Thursday that Biden and the team had gathered in the “Situation Room,” the heavily secured situation center at US government headquarters in Washington. At 6:30 p.m. CET, Biden wants to speak about the Russian attack in a speech.
