This morning, I met with my G7 counterparts to discuss President Putin’s unjustified attack on Ukraine and we agreed to move forward on devastating packages of sanctions and other economic measures to hold Russia to account. We stand with the brave people of Ukraine. pic.twitter.com/dzvYxj7J9w

Along the same lines, the German Vice Chancellor, Robert Habeck, pointed out that there will be a “strong sanctions package” that it “will isolate the Russian economy from industrial progress, attack and freeze financial assets and holdings, and drastically limit access to European and American markets.”
Already last night, in his first comments after Russian missiles began to fall on Ukraine, Biden had said that the United States “and its allies and partners will respond in a united and determined manner. The world will hold Russia accountable.”
The US president also spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyand said that he had promised to “provide support and help to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”
Biden noted that Zelensky had asked him to “call on world leaders to speak out” against Putin’s “blatant aggression.”
Biden also called a meeting of the National Security Council “to talk about the latest developments in Ukraine.”
Already on Tuesday, after Putin first announced that he would send troops as “peacekeepers” to the two small areas already controlled by Moscow-backed separatists, Western countries sprang into action.
The US government has joined European allies in imposing sanctions on two Russian banks, Moscow’s sovereign debt and several oligarchs, among other measures.
And on Wednesday, when Russian troops were clearly poised to attack, Biden announced that he would impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which links Germany and Russia.
According to senior US officials, lhe new, tougher sanctions will include bigger banks, more oligarchs close to Putin and, most importantly, a ban on exports to Russia of high-tech equipment and components.
According to the AFP agency, among the most controversial sanctions would be the point directly at Putinwho is said to have amassed a vast fortune during his two decades in power in Russia.
