It is the fourth executive that falls during the second presidency of Emmanuel Macron and the third in just over a year.

The French prime minister defeat in the issue of trust triggered the fall of the government. After almost three hours of speeches, the deputies voted that they will not support François Bayrou, who had proposed an ambitious adjustment plan.

All parties on the left, such as the extreme right of Marine Le Pen and its allies, had announced from the outset their “irrevocable” decision to vote against the prime minister.

With 194 votes in favor and 364 againstthe National Assembly rejected the cutting plan presented by the Prime Minister, who announced that he will resign.

This situation forces President Emmanuel Macron to decide between the urgent training of a new executive or the call for legislative electionsjust a year after the last elections.

Bayroun government

Bayrou’s government is the fourth that falls in this period and the third in just over a yearwhich reflects a deep fragmentation of Parliament. The lack of consensus did not facilitate the approval of a budget, while the public debt reaches the 113% of GDP and deficit is about 6%. The opposition described this period as “self -distribution.”

In his final speech before the deputies, Bayrou defended the need to face the fiscal crisis with a cutting plan of 44,000 million euros, arguing that the real risk was not the motion of trust, but the inaction. “The risk was not this motion, but to do as if nothing, as it has always been done. It is not a political issue, it is a historical issue. Of those that concern peoples and nations,” said the prime minister.

Throughout the week, Bayrou multiplied his interventions in the media through a media campaign which took the opportunity to denounce the opposition’s attitude.
