Two years after the first case: 31,324 new infections in Austria

In total, there have been more than 2.6 million confirmed infections so far. Within 24 hours, 25 more Covid deaths were registered, the interior and health ministries reported. The corona pandemic has claimed 14,725 lives in Austria since it broke out. Meanwhile, the number of hospital patients continued to rise.

On February 25, 2020, an Italian couple in Innsbruck tested positive for the then new corona virus. The two were probably infected in the northern Italian city of Bergamo and are considered the first Covid patients in Austria. They had a mild course of the disease, but were nevertheless admitted to the Innsbruck clinic. After ten days and two negative corona tests, the two Italians were able to leave the isolation station again.

2.6 million cases detected

The coronavirus was here to stay. According to the US University Johns Hopkins (JHU) in Baltimore, which has been responsible for data collection since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been around 432 million confirmed infections and 5.9 million Covid deaths worldwide.

In Austria there have been exactly 2,610,286 confirmed cases and a high number of undetected infections. 2,314,818 people are considered to have recovered from an infection, and 28,526 were added within the past 24 hours. However, more than 14,700 people died of or with Covid-19 by the second anniversary, 188 in the past week alone. Thousands of other infected people had or are struggling with long-Covid consequences.

193 intensive care patients

Tens of thousands of infected people have had to be treated in hospital since February 2020. There are currently 2,478 Covid patients in hospitals alone, 65 more than the day before and 187 more than a week ago. 193 people are being cared for in intensive care units. This number has fallen by five seriously ill since Thursday and has remained stable within a week. The maximum values ​​were at the end of November 2020, when there were 4,689 infected people in hospitals and 709 in intensive care units.

Peak on January 27th

The record number of new infections, on the other hand, is not that long ago: 43,053 were recorded this year on January 27th. The current 31,324 new cases in Austria are now well above the average of 26,506 positive tests over the past seven days. The seven-day incidence (number of infections within a week) was 2,077 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a slight increase compared to the previous day. As of Friday, there were 280,743 actively infected people in Austria, 2,773 more than the day before.

A total of around 490,000 PCR tests were registered in the past 24 hours, the positive rate was 6.4 percent. Burgenland reported 978 new infections, Carinthia 1,949 and Lower Austria in absolute numbers the most with 6,867. 5,091 infections were added in Upper Austria, 1,529 in Salzburg and 3,978 in Styria. There were 3,140 other positive test results in Tyrol, 1,814 in Vorarlberg and 5,978 in Vienna.
