“Beauty and health of the skin are inextricably linked,” says cosmetic surgeon Matthias Koller in the summer special of “Healthy & Happy” around skin health. The skin is not only a mirror of our health, but also of our well -being and not infrequently also the source of our self -confidence. The expert explains what measures work if you are dissatisfied with your own skin.
What is beautiful skin for you?
Koller: For me, beautiful skin is especially healthy skin. The aesthetics of the skin and health belong directly together.
What are the most common skin wishes and concerns of your patients?
Most want a finer complexion, smooth and freshly looking skin, with small pores and less irregularities such as acne or surgical scars. Most want a “back” to an optics of the younger ego. Although aesthetic medicine now offers impressive opportunities: the basis for beautiful skin is laid in everyday life.
What can I do preventively for healthy and beautiful skin?
Diet is the strongest pillar. The so-called skin-darm axis has been proven: if the intestine is doing well, the skin is also fine. You should definitely pay attention to this.
What are your top nutrition tips for skin health?
In short: eating vegetables as varied as possible and versatile, integrating fermented foods such as sauerkraut and paying attention to a predominantly basic diet, for example drinking lukewarm lemon water in the morning.
We are often not satisfied with our own skin and their optics. What helps against cellulite?
Cellulite is often genetic and occurs at a young age. There are two types: one can be treated surgically (subcision), the classic ‘orange skin’, on the other hand, with metabolic stimulation, nutrition and shock wave treatments. Several sessions at intervals of one to two weeks each can significantly improve the complexion. But you rarely get them away.
Keyword: wrinkles. Some celebrate them because they are signs of a moving life. The others interfere with the look of aging and want to do something about it.
This is always very individual. If folds interfere, modern beauty medicine can make a good contribution. Basically, it is always about improving the quality of life for the patients.

What do you say about the facial expressions that we know from Hollywood?
These sprayed faces, the unnatural, this convulsive attempt to bring young people attributes in the face, for example by spraying yoke sheets excessively or making a chewing cheek, is of course terrible. It is important: less is more and the goal is natural results.
Where on the face do you use botox?
Wrinkles that arise from the facial muscles are treated with botox. This applies, for example, to the anger fold between the eyebrows. You can dose exactly that the skin does not become unnaturally smooth or that you can’t move anything. But you can achieve that the folds no longer fit into the muscle.
When do you use hyaluronic acid?
In the event of folds due to loss of volume – such as the yoke arch or the nasolabial fold – hyaluronic acid helps. Here you fill up under the skin, so to speak, and thus reach a tighter complexion. Incidentally, you shouldn’t spray cheeks at all because it looks too unnatural.
What risks are there?
Blue spots can arise, but they quickly pass. The good thing is: botox and hyaluron are fundamentally reversible and dissolve. Very, very rarely can a eyelid weakness occur. But that has never happened to me since 2006.
