Brother stabbed in the stomach: 18-year-old has to go to an institution

In November last year, a bloody crime occurred in an apartment in Wels: an 18-year-old from Congo stabbed his 15-year-old brother with a kitchen knife. The stab struck the liver, and the victim survived the potentially life-threatening attack. The argument between the two boys was probably about the mother’s mobile phone, the younger one allegedly did not want to tell the older one the password.

According to a psychiatric report, the 18-year-old has suffered from schizophrenia since he was 15. It started with sleep disorders and thoughts went in circles. In combination with drugs, his condition got worse and worse. Therefore, due to the “acute untreated illness in combination with cannabis consumption”, it is to be feared that he will commit dangerous acts again, according to the negative prognosis of the experts.

At the time of the crime, the 18-year-old was living in a group home and was visiting his family.

The public prosecutor’s office in Linz did not press charges in this case, but requested that the boy be committed to an institution for mentally abnormal offenders. “My client made a confession, but he didn’t want to kill,” the defense attorney cast doubts that the so-called inciting act was an attempted murder.

“I am healthy”

But the 18-year-old made a radical U-turn in the process on Friday: No, he was not ill. “I lied to avoid going to jail.” He preferred to go to the hospital, so he only pretended that he heard voices. He is “healthy” and doesn’t want to take any more medication. “Today I want to make a clean sweep,” he told the jury. His brother has “false friends”, they are Chechens who are trying to kill his mother. That was the reason why he stabbed.

Psychiatrically, there was no doubt that the boy was ill, because in the residential group he was noticed because of his “God madness”. The topics “religion and killing” are “always present” with the 18-year-old. The jury returned a unanimous decision of insanity and ruled the act an attempted murder. However, the decision is not final.
