The shortage of semiconductors slowed down automakers worldwide. The result was and is sometimes extreme delivery difficulties. Only Tesla could supply the market with its models. Many wondered: how does Musk do it? Internal chat logs now provide information on how the Tesla boss tricked. According to this, the Americans only installed one instead of two central control units. Namely in the models 3 and Y, which have also been exported to Europe.
A security risk?
Does the omission of the second control unit have an impact? This has been the subject of heated debate since the affair was uncovered. Some think that it is just a backup device, others that it processes data for autonomous driving. However, this function has not yet been released anyway, so there is no security risk, say engineers.
But the fact is: Tesla did not inform its customers that the control unit was missing. Even die-hard Tesla fans criticize this fact in various Internet forums. And Elon Musk himself? The Tesla boss ignores inquiries and has not yet commented. Not even whether the control unit, as is usual in such cases, is retrofitted – at the expense of the car manufacturer.
