The chase in St. Veit an der Glan only ended when the 16-year-old hit a second police car and crashed, the Carinthian State Police Headquarters reported on Saturday. The youth was noticed by the officials because he had been out and about without a light. One of the officers was injured when the youth was stopped and arrested.
The boy had steered his moped towards St. Veit around 8.30 p.m. on the B94 (Ossiacher Straße). When the civil police noticed that the moped had no lights, they tried to stop him. The driver disregarded the stop signs and fled through the town of St. Veit and outside of it at high speed, sometimes driving over 100 km/h there. The maximum permissible design speed for mopeds is 45 km/h.
A second patrol car had meanwhile overtaken the moped, but the 16-year-old tried to get back in front of the police car, which resulted in an accident. The driver is reported to the St. Veit an der Glan district authority for several crimes. According to the police, the vehicle has been modified several times, but has no turn signals, no rear-view mirrors and no sticker. The license plate and registration certificate were taken from the boy.
