Representing the approximately 200,000 volunteers in the Upper Austrian Sports, the 16 district winners have been chosen in the past few months by online vote. In exceptional cases, there was a financial reward for the volunteers. Each district winner receives 1000 euros each, there is another 1000 euros for the national winner.
16 winners – that also means 16 very personal stories. One special is that of David PühringerChairman of Judo Union Kirchham and district winner in Gmunden, who was elected by an expert jury as the national winner. “The sport and the club gave me so much – so much self -confidence for further life. But also so much body control and body awareness. I would like to give that back.” Pühringer was 23 years old when he took over the chairman office eleven years ago after the unexpected death of his predecessor Ernst Staudinger. Not an easy task in an association that includes around 140 members. “It was immediately clear to me at the time that I would like to take over and preserve the legacy together with a broad team. Actually, this should only have been the case as a normal handover, and not eleven years ago.” Fate wanted it differently at the time.
