Russia limits the launch of European satellites in retaliation for sanctions

The EU on Thursday banned the export to Russia of planes, parts and equipment from the aeronautics and space industries, in reaction to the Russian invasion.

These sanctions partially affect the European aeronautical and space sector, which works jointly with Russia, reported the AFP news agency.

Roscosmos and Arianespace are part of a joint venture, Starsem, which operates the Soyuz rocket. Eight Soyuz rockets are scheduled to be launched in 2022, three from Kourou and five from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Without Soyuz rockets, Europe would not have its own capacity to launch some satellites, before the start-up of the space shuttle Ariane 6, whose first flight is scheduled for the end of the year.

On the other hand, Roscosmos denounced that its website is suffering a cyberattack from abroad, the Sputnik news agency reported.

“The Roscosmos website is suffering from a DDoS attack from foreign servers since night. Technicians take necessary measures to neutralize the attack”said an agency representative.
