According to the so-called Snapback mechanism from the historical contract, the old rules have been in place again since 2:01 a.m. (MESZ). Now, among other things, punitive measures such as a weapon embargo, a ban on uranium enrichment and a global freezing of assets work.
Germany, Great Britain and France (E3) had started the mechanism to reintroduce the sanctions as the contracting states of the Vienna Nuclear Agreement with Iran from 2015 a month ago. In her opinion, Tehran fundamentally violates the agreements. An example is the enrichment of uranium, which goes far beyond the values that are necessary for civil purposes.

There had been no diplomatic solution in recent months – but Berlin, London and Paris emphasize that they are still ready for negotiations. The United States had already left the Vienna Agreement of President Donald Trump in 2018 in 2018. The USA, E3, Iran’s arch enemy Israel and other western states fear that Iran could build nuclear weapons secretly. Tehran denies such intentions.
WadePhul: No reason to enrich so highly except for weapons
The German Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul called Iran, despite the reinstatement of the sanctions, for new negotiations on the controversial nuclear program. “With the Snapback, a chapter of our diplomatic efforts ends,” said the CDU politician on Saturday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. He added: “Iran has the opportunity to open a new chapter of diplomacy. It is up to him to take the path to new conversations. We are ready for it.”
