Dutch KLM canceled flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg

The Netherlands-based KLM airline canceled flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg due to anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the European Union, NU.nl reported on February 26, citing the carrier’s press secretary.

The reason for the cancellation of flights is a package of sanctions, according to which no spare parts can be delivered to Russia by plane, including for their own use.

“This means that we can no longer guarantee safe flights to Russia,” a KLM spokesman said.

The company clarified that the plane to St. Petersburg will return to Amsterdam, and the liner bound for Moscow will be redirected to another city.

KLM says it is still reviewing the situation with Russian flights scheduled for Saturday and assessing the impact of flying over Russia.

On the same day, the German airline Lufthansa announced the suspension of flights to Russia and in the country’s airspace for a week. And the Latvian AirBaltic has suspended flights to Russia until March 26. The company explained its decision by assessing the situation before the flight and following the recommendations of the authorities.
