Six people died in flooding due to heavy rains that hit the Australian state of Queensland on Sunday, February 27, writes the Sydney Morning Herald.
The body of the sixth victim, a 34-year-old man, was found in Indorupilli County after his car was caught in flood waters at 2:30 am on Sunday (20:30 Saturday Moscow time). Rescuers fear for the life of another man who fell into the Brisbane River.
Queensland Prime Minister Anastasia Palaszczuk said after a meeting of the disaster management committee that the heaviest downpours are directed to Brisbane. The Brisbane River was expected to peak at 2.7m but hit 3.1m on Sunday morning, last seen during the 2011 floods when it peaked at 4.46m due to prolonged downpours.
“It fills all the catchments, all the rivers, and it all rushes into the Brisbane River. There is a rain bomb that just hangs over the entire southeast. We thought it would weaken, but no, now it will be with us for another 24 hours,” she said.
On Sunday morning, 1,040 people were in evacuation centers. Rescue work on the water continued throughout the weekend. Landslides and falling trees exacerbate the danger of the situation. All areas of southeast Queensland have been affected to some extent. More than 21,200 homes in Queensland were without electricity as of 8:30 am (02:30 Moscow time), according to energy company Energex.
An even more difficult situation due to the weather has developed in Brazil. There, as of Saturday, February 19, the number of victims of heavy rains in the municipality of Petropolis has reached 152, among the dead 27 minors. It is noted that 165 residents, according to the latest data, are missing, another 967 people have lost their homes.
