Combs committed serious crimes and permanently damaged two women, the judge stated. Sexual offenses would have to be proven with a correspondingly high punishment in order to convey the message to sacrifice and perpetrators that perpetrators are held accountable.
The public prosecutor had previously targeted a prison sentence of eleven years and three months for the 55-year-old rapper, while the defense had called for a maximum penalty of 14 months. Combs, who had been sitting in a prison in the New York district of Brookly for around a year, would have largely served.

Shortly before the punishment was announced, Combs had spoken. In an emotional speech, he asked the judge for grace. He wanted to apologize again with his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura for suffering. He also apologized to his mother and children. His earlier behavior was disgusting, shameful and sick, said Combs. He had completely lost control under the influence of drugs.
