He was one of the companions in Emmanuel Macron’s promising early years: from 2017 to 2020, Edouard Philippe headed the French government as Prime Minister. The 54-year-old is currently mayor of Le Havre and head of the right-wing liberal party Horizons and therefore part of the center-right government alliance.

On Tuesday, Philippe was the first politician from the government camp to call on President Macron to resign. “The solution to the crisis lies with him,” said Philippe. Macron should resign from office after a new government approves a budget.
“He got himself into this situation by making decisions at the wrong time,” Philippe said. His demand is not entirely altruistic: Philippe wants to run as a candidate in the presidential elections (in which Macron is no longer allowed to run after two terms in office) – and is likely to hope for better chances from an earlier date.
