Putin held talks with Pashinyan

Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone conversations with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This was announced on Monday, February 28, by the press service of the Kremlin.

During the conversation, issues of bilateral relations and ensuring stability on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border were discussed.

Earlier, on February 9, Pashinyan announced that Yerevan, without preconditions, handed over to Baku the remains of 108 people who were reported missing during the first Karabakh war of the 1990s. According to him, the remains were transferred during 2021.

As the politician noted, at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on February 4, ways to resolve humanitarian issues were discussed via videoconference.

On February 7, Azerbaijan handed over eight servicemen to Armenia. They were detained in November 2021 in the process of preventing a provocation by the Armenian armed forces in the Kelbajar direction of the state border.

According to the agreement of the parties, Yerevan should transfer information to Baku about the Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians killed during the first Armenian-Azerbaijani war, as well as about their burial places.

On February 4, Pashinyan noted the importance of resolving the Karabakh conflict and concluding a peace treaty at a video conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

On November 26, 2021, tripartite talks between Putin, Aliyev and Pashinyan were held in Sochi. Following the meeting, a joint statement was issued. It states that the parties agreed to take steps to increase the level of stability and security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have disputed ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh since 1988. Then the region, which is inhabited mainly by Armenians, announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the military conflict of 1992-1994, Baku lost control over Karabakh. In September 2020, Baku took control of a number of settlements during military operations.

In November 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of Russia, signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The document, among other things, provides for the introduction of Russian peacekeepers into the region, the exchange of prisoners between the parties to the conflict, the transfer by Armenia to Azerbaijan of a number of regions of the region and the return of refugees to Karabakh.
