How a Formula 1 world champion went from idol to stepping stone

Who can claim to have worked for a Formula 1 world champion? Marco Brugger can do that. The 26-year-old native of Tyrol was part of Nico Rosberg’s social media team. Today, his social media agency supports athletes such as Formula 1 driver Lando Norris and ski ace Lucas Braathen as well as the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). Brugger is one of more than 70 experts who will be at the OÖNachrichten Digital Days in Linz on October 15th and 16th.

In his lecture “Content and Social Media in Top Sport” he will talk about the challenges that come with working with international sports stars. In his masterclass “From video idea to implementation” he will explain how videos are created that reach millions of people on social networks.

With his agency, Brugger supports customers who want to draw attention to themselves with digital content. In a world that is increasingly saturated with digital content, it is important to stand out from the crowd, he says. “You have to stand out and not do something that a lot of other people are doing.” For Brugger, three important points emerged that he would like to go into in more detail at the Digital Days. “You have to be creative, you have to tell stories and you have to evoke emotions.”

Above all, it’s about putting your own story in the spotlight. “Everyone has a story, and everything you do has a story. In order to captivate people and take them with me, I simply have to tell the story correctly. There are a lot of companies that don’t even know that they have a cool story or can’t tell it properly. But that’s essential if you’re going to be successful.”

Everything for the dream

Marco Brugger’s story is also worth telling. The Ötztal native’s interest in sports grew during his youth. He was particularly fond of Formula 1 and tennis. Nico Rosberg and tennis legend Rafael Nadal were his idols. After graduating from the HTL, he worked as a construction technician at a construction company. “I have to be honest, I wasn’t particularly good at it because I didn’t feel like it. But if you want to be good at something, you’re only good at it if you enjoy doing it and have a passion for it,” he says today. He found his true passion in making videos.

But he first had to earn the trust of the top athletes he works for today. He did this in a very original way. “I picked out a lot of email addresses for members of Nico Rosberg’s social media team. I wrote emails to them saying that I really wanted to work for Nico Rosberg and that I would even do it for free. I just wanted to get the chance to make videos for Nico. Six months later they wrote to me saying that they had received all of my emails and that they thought it was great that I was giving so much to this dream. And that they were giving me a chance and one would like to offer an internship position.”

Brugger seized the opportunity. In 2021 he moved to Monaco, where Rosberg lives, for the job. The internship quickly turned into a permanent role, and he accompanied the 2016 Formula 1 world champion for a year and a half. He still fondly remembers one or two incidents during this time. “Once the opportunity arose to shoot videos for Nico on Rafael Nadal’s yacht. We spent six hours there. My film colleague and I really wanted a photo with him. But no one was there to take one. Then Nico Rosberg took the photo of us and Rafael Nadal,” says Brugger, laughing.
