Six babies were born in a single day, last Tuesday, in Venice’s municipal hospital, an event not seen in ten years. The newborns are four Italian children, a baby born to parents from Sri Lanka and a Palestinian girl, the hospital said. These are children of parents with permanent residence in Venice.
The six births on Tuesday mean that more children were born in Venice’s old town than in the previous year: by October 7th, 2024 there had been 211 births, and on October 7th, 2025 there were already 214.
Significant population decline in Venice
“A record day in a city that is disappearing,” was the title of the Italian daily “La Repubblica” in its report on the exceptionally high number of births in Venice this week. The city has always been affected by a severe decline in population.
