AGES warns against champagne with ecstasy

Although no such case has yet occurred in Austria, the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) warns on behalf of the Ministry of Health against three-liter champagne bottles that could contain ecstasy. There has already been one fatality in Germany. It’s about the Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial brand.

After consuming the contents of the bottle, seven people in Germany became seriously ill and one person died – the OÖN reported. Four cases of illness were registered in the Netherlands. In both cases, the bottles in question were purchased from an as yet unknown website. It is currently unknown how the MDMA ended up in these bottles. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that other bottles of the same brand are in circulation that also contain MDMA, according to AGES.

Liquid MDMA does not fizz

No such incidents are currently reported in Austria. The Ministry of Health nevertheless asks consumers to look out for bottles of Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial of three liters with the lot code LAJ7QAB6780004. This code can be found on the label on the back of the bottle.

Bottles filled with MDMA are indistinguishable from bottles filled with champagne. However, when poured, there is a noticeable difference: liquid MDMA does not fizz, it is reddish-brown in color that darkens over time, and it smells like anise. If you suspect something, do not touch the bottle or glasses and do not taste them. Even trying it can lead to serious health problems. If there is any suspicion, the police must be informed.
