Thousands of Australians forced to flee their homes due to torrential rains and record flooding

In the rural town of lismorethe settler Danika Hardman discovered – this Monday, upon waking up – that the muddy waters had reached the balcony of his apartment, on a second floor. She and her partner managed to climb to the roof of the building, where people who had kayaked by helped them onto a makeshift rescue boat.

“We were rescued by two people in a boat”Hardiman told AFP, after describing Lismore’s situation as “horrific”.

The emergency services were seen saturated of calls, so some local people, including the mayor of Lismore, Steve Kingresorted to the social media looking for help. “If anyone has a boat and can get to Engine Street, there’s a pregnant woman sitting on its roof. Please help.”the mayor posted on Facebook.
