UK banned Russian ships from entering its ports

The UK has banned Russian ships from entering its ports. This was announced on February 28 by the head of the British Ministry of Transport Grant Shapps.

“Today I wrote to all UK ports asking them not to grant access to any Russian flagged, registered, owned, controlled, chartered or operated ships,” the minister tweeted.

The authorities raised this issue after it became known that the Russian oil tanker NS Champion, operated by Sovcomflot, is due to dock in the Orkney Islands this week. The shipping company has previously been sanctioned by the European Union and the United States due to Russia’s operation in the Donbas.

The ministry indicated that the country is going to continue to strengthen sanctions against Russian shipping. As Shapps noted, additional sanctions are currently being developed, information about them will soon be published.

Saturday, February 26, Shapps informed, that the Ministry of Transport decided to ban Russian private planes from landing at the airports of the kingdom or flying through its airspace. The ban went into effect on the same day. Shapps outlined such a measure as the expansion of sanctions on Russian aircraft, which have already been introduced since the beginning of Russia’s operation in Ukraine. Prior to this, the same ban had been introduced for Aeroflot airlines, due to which all flights to London and Dublin were canceled until May 23.

The ban on the use of their airspace for Russian airlines was introduced by other countries of the European Union (EU). So, on February 27, France banned air travel over its territory. On the same day, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Iceland, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Canada, and Spain closed the airspace for Russian aircraft. Earlier, Romania, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria also joined the sanctions. In response, Moscow took mirror measures against 36 states, they will be prohibited from entering the airspace of the Russian Federation.

On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law. He also severed diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation. Western countries have introduced new packages of anti-Russian sanctions.

The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.
