Harvest time in Upper Austria: High yields, but only low income for farmers

As far as the quantity of the harvest is concerned, 2025 is a good year for agriculture in Upper Austria: According to the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture, the weather in summer in particular – no droughts, but sufficient rainfall – has had a positive effect on many crops.

Corn, for example, was able to benefit; around 60 percent has already been harvested. A quarter of Austria’s corn cultivation, 51,360 hectares, occurs in Upper Austria. “We are expecting an average yield of 12.1 tonnes per hectare this year. That corresponds to an increase of around eleven percent compared to the five-year average,” says Helmut Feitzlmayr, head of the crop production department at the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture. There could be greater demand for corn from Austria this year because the harvest from important exporters from southern Europe was lower due to the drought.
