US President Donald Trump and leaders of Qatar, Türkiye and Egypt signed this Monday in the Egyptian city of Sharm el Sheikh the agreement that puts an end to more than two years of clashes between Israel and Hamas. The summit brought together around twenty world leaders and marked a turning point for the region.

The Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisideclared that his country and the United States seek “consolidate and sustain the ceasefire” in Gaza. During brief statements with Trump, he thanked the “ability” of the American president to “achieving the agreement on Gaza” and praised “its unprecedented achievement.” “You are the only one who can achieve peace in the region,” he said.

Donald Trump led the summit and highlighted that the agreement marks “the beginning of the golden era of Israel and the Middle East.”

Donald Trump signed the pact together with the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the leaders of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Egypt, Abdelfatah al Sisi. The agreement establishes a ceasefire, the progressive withdrawal of Israeli troops, the entry of humanitarian aid and the exchange of hostages for prisoners.

Trump previously visited Israel and, before Parliament, assured that the agreement marks “the beginning of the golden age of Israel and the Middle East.” Benjamin Netanyahu, who did not travel to Egypt, stressed that Trump was “determinant for the return of the hostages.”

Implementation and phases of the agreement

Since last week it has been implemented the first phase of the pact, which contemplates the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, the massive entry of humanitarian aid and the exchange of hostages for prisoners. This morning, Hamas completed the handover of the last 20 Israeli hostages still alive.

In the second phase, already under negotiation, the reconstruction of the enclave, the disarmament of Hamas and the governance of the Strip will be addressed, seeking to establish sustainable peace and stop the violence that has devastated the region during the last two years.
