The US President could not have sent a stronger signal of support for Israel to the world. Donald Trump celebrated his hostage deal during his speech in the Israeli parliament (Knesset) on Monday and called for an “era of peace throughout the region.” He spoke of a historic departure and “golden age” for the Middle East.
The speech began spiritually, drawing cheers and a standing ovation: “We have gathered here to give thanks to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Trump initially read strictly from the teleprompter. Then he deviated from the script and delivered a humorous victory speech – with political messages that took a deep look into his thoughts.
“Pardon Netanyahu”
First he praised Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, from whom he had forced painful compromises in negotiations with Palestinian terrorists. To help the criticized head of government, Trump said: “He’s not the easiest person to argue with, but that’s exactly what makes him so great.”
Towards the end of the speech, Trump became even more explicit: He called on Israel’s President Yitzhak Herzog to pardon Netanyahu – and thus stop the ongoing trials (including for corruption). “He’s one of the best leaders in wartime. Cigars and champagne? Who cares?” Trump asked, alluding to Netanyahu’s acceptance of expensive gifts. Then the US President declared: “Well, enough controversy for today” – and ended the topic.
The Israeli prime minister thanked Trump profusely. Netanyahu spoke of a “moving day that will go down in the history of our people.” The Israeli head of government also expressed the hope that with Trump’s help, Israel could conclude rapprochement agreements with other Arab and Muslim states. He suggested that Trump be the first non-Israeli to be awarded the Israel Prize, the country’s highest honor. “As for the other prize, it’s only a matter of time before you get it,” Netanyahu said, referring to the Nobel Peace Prize. He once again called Trump “Israel’s greatest friend.”
Sobering signals
In the afternoon, Trump traveled to Egypt to ceremoniously sign the Gaza Agreement in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and to hold an international conference on the future of the Gaza Strip.
