Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for the country’s membership in the European Union (EU). This was announced on February 28 by the presidential party Servant of the People.
“Zelensky signed a statement on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. A historic moment,” the Facebook post reads.
The party also released the text of a cover letter signed by Zelensky.
“With this letter, Ukraine, as a European state that respects the values enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union, has the honor to apply for EU membership in accordance with Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union,” the message says.
The letter was sent to French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country presides over the EU Council, as well as to President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Parliament Ursula von der Leyen.
Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian leader, during a briefing, asked the EU member states to immediately join the state to the alliance. Accession could take place under a new special procedure, he believes.
On the eve of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine should eventually join the EU.
On February 26, Polish President Andrzej Duda proposed immediately granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership in express mode. In addition, according to Duda, Ukraine “should have access to funds from the EU for reconstruction.”
On the same day, Zelensky called on the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, to make a decision on Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
At the end of July 2021, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine approved a foreign policy strategy that provides for a course towards joining the European Union and NATO and is aimed at countering Russia’s policy.
In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted amendments to the Constitution, fixing the course towards the EU and NATO. Ukraine has become the sixth state to receive the status of a partner of the alliance with enhanced opportunities.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass against the backdrop of increased shelling by the Ukrainian military. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
