“The city of Schärding is currently on everyone’s lips,” said Azer Maher, chairman of the Schärding Tourism Association, at a press event on Tuesday, which was organized for a double reason: After the end of the successful state garden show, which attracted almost 300,000 visitors to the baroque city from April to the beginning of October, Schärding will continue to be in the media spotlight in the next few weeks: As reported, the Silberzeile is going to the Upper Austrian representative Race of the ORF live show “9 Places – 9 Treasures”, in which the most beautiful place in Austria will be chosen on October 25th (8:15 p.m., ORF 2). The winner will be determined via live voting during the broadcast. The municipality is also holding a “public viewing” in the Kubinsaal from 8 p.m.
“Invaluable opportunity”
“Things couldn’t be going better for our city at the moment. One major event follows the next,” says Schärding’s mayor Günter Streicher. Last May, the city boss received a request from ORF as to whether he could imagine Schärding taking part in the Upper Austria voting. “The decision was easy for me,” says Streicher with a smile. In the preselection, the Silberzeile finally prevailed in the Upper Austria-wide voting against the “Schlögener Schlinge” and the “Tal der Feitelmacher”. Just one day after the finale of the State Garden Show, Streicher received the news that Silberzeile would represent Upper Austria. “I voted as much as I could myself. In the municipality, we even used the work cell phones for this purpose,” says Streicher.
The Schärding mayor will be able to lead a 20-person delegation to Vienna on October 25th, which will represent Schärding in the live show. The respective state winners are promoted by presenters from the ORF state studios and celebrities from the federal states. Schärding was able to win over organic gardener Karl Ploberger as a “godfather” for the Silberzeile.
“It is an invaluable opportunity to position ourselves as a tourist pearl in Upper Austria. Just taking part in a main evening program on ORF means great advertising value for the city, but also for the region,” says tourism association chairman Maher. The solidarity in Schärding made participation in the final possible in the first place. Sandra Hofbauer, chairwoman of “Schärding Innovativ” also underlines this: “We are not just entering the race with a colorful row of houses, but with a special attitude to life and a lot of heart.”
Sustainable enrichment
The positive atmosphere and solidarity were also crucial to the success of the recently concluded State Garden Show, as managing director Andrea Berghammer emphasized at the final press conference. “It was an incredibly beautiful togetherness. The State Garden Show was a meeting place for the entire population, our concept was a complete success,” says Berghammer.
