Europe Blocks Russian State Media to Curb Toxic Disinformation

“We are developing tools to prohibit its toxic and harmful disinformation for Europe,” said the head of the Community Executive, who has confirmed that more sanctioning measures are being prepared against the Belarusian regime of Alexander Lukashenko for his help to Russia in invading Ukraine.

For its part, the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) announced “the immediate suspension” of the Russian agency TASS, as a consequence of “the new regulation applied by the Russian government, which severely restricts the freedom of the media”.

“The EANA board considers that TASS has violated its objective, as defined in its statutes, by not being able to provide impartial information, which is the core of the EANA mission statement,” it adds.

EANA currently has 32 members from all over Europe.

On Saturday, Russia’s media regulator, Roskomnadzorordered the national media to remove all content referring to civilians killed by the Russian army in Ukraine, as well as the use of terms such as “invasion”, “offensive” and “declaration of war”.
