In Ukraine, announced the successful registration of an application for accession to the EU

Ukraine’s application for membership in the European Union has been successfully registered, the consideration procedure has already begun. This was announced on Monday, March 1, by the representative of Ukraine to the EU for nuclear energy Vsevolod Chentsov.

“I handed over the signed by the President of Ukraine [Владимиром] Zelensky Ukraine’s application for membership in the European Union to the EU Permanent Representative Philippe Leglis-Cost, the current President of the EU Council in Europe. The application has been registered. The procedure has been started,” he wrote in Twitter.

The day before, the Ukrainian leader signed an application for the country’s membership in the European Union (EU).

Earlier on the same day, the Ukrainian leader, during a briefing, asked the EU member states to immediately join the state to the alliance. Accession could take place under a new special procedure, he believes.

On the eve of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine should eventually join the EU.

On February 26, Polish President Andrzej Duda proposed immediately granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership in express mode. In addition, according to Duda, Ukraine “should have access to funds from the EU for reconstruction.”

On the same day, Zelensky called on the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, to make a decision on Ukraine’s membership in the EU.

At the end of July 2021, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine approved a foreign policy strategy that provides for a course towards joining the European Union and NATO and is aimed at countering Russia’s policy.

In February 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted amendments to the Constitution, fixing the course towards the EU and NATO. Ukraine has become the sixth state to receive the status of a partner of the alliance with enhanced opportunities.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass against the backdrop of increased shelling by the Ukrainian military. After that, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.

The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. In the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces was reported, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to Russia.

On February 21, the heads of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, asked Putin to recognize the independence of the republics. The corresponding decrees were signed in the evening of the same day. In the presence of the leaders of the republics, the President of the Russian Federation also signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and assistance. The documents were ratified the next day.
