As the police announced on Tuesday, the infant had to be resuscitated on February 24 and died in the hospital a day later. The mother spoke of a sudden cardiac arrest. The post-mortem found that death from widespread cerebral edema “had most likely been caused by violent shaking”.
The police were called to the 25-year-old Romanian’s house shortly before 4 p.m. last Friday. Rescue workers were carrying out the resuscitation of the ten-month-old baby. The child was then taken to the children’s hospital in Graz and received intensive care there, but died on Saturday. The doctors quickly determined a possible massive brain injury. The prosecutor then ordered an autopsy.
The mother was meanwhile interrogated by means of an interpreter and got caught up in contradictions in her statements. On Sunday, the result of the forensic medicine was also available: The baby had a large-scale cerebral edema, which was most likely caused by violent shaking. When confronted with the mother, she did not comment on the allegations. “Indications could be found that suggest that the suspect is mentally ill,” the police statement said. The woman was taken to the Graz-Jakomini prison and is currently in custody.
